A central heating inhibitor is a chemical solution that prevents rust, sludge, and scale from forming inside your boiler, radiators, and pipework. It helps:

  • Prevent cold spots on radiators
  • Reduce the risk of breakdowns

  • Central heating inhibitor (Fernox, Sentinel, etc.)
  • Radiator bleed key
  • Adjustable spanner or wrench
  • Funnel (if adding via radiator)
  • Towel or cloth
  • Protective gloves (optional)

🚿 How to Add Inhibitor to Your Central Heating System

There are 3 main methods, depending on your system:


Method 1: Via a Radiator (Most Common for Sealed Systems)

  1. Turn off the heating and let the system cool.
  2. Choose a radiator (usually upstairs, towel radiator is ideal).
  3. Bleed the radiator to release pressure.
  4. Loosen the bleed valve or plug with a spanner.
  5. Use a funnel to pour the inhibitor into the radiator.
  6. Tighten everything back, bleed again if needed, and repressurise the system via the filling loop.
  7. Turn the heating back on and circulate for at least 1 hour.

Method 2: Via a Magnetic Filter (If Installed)

  1. Turn off heating and isolate the filter using valves.
  2. Unscrew the top or drain point of the filter.
  3. Pour the inhibitor directly into the filter chamber.
  4. Seal and turn valves back on. Repressurise if needed.

Method 3: Via the Filling Loop or System Drain (Advanced Users)

This method is more technical and often requires draining some of the system water or using a special dosing tool. We recommend this only for qualified engineers or confident DIYers.


❌ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Adding Inhibitor to the Wrong Place
    • Don’t pour it into your boiler! Only add via radiators, filters, or filling points.
  2. Not Turning Off the System First
    • Always let the system cool down to avoid injury or spills.
  3. Not Repressurising the System
    • After adding inhibitor, your pressure may drop. Check and top up using the filling loop.
  4. Overdosing or Underdosing
    • Follow the manufacturer’s guide. One 1L bottle typically treats up to 10 radiators.
  5. Skipping Annual Top-Ups
    • Check inhibitor levels every year or after draining the system.
  6. Ignoring Sludge Problems
    • Inhibitors prevent sludge, but they don’t remove it. If your system already has sludge, consider a power flush first.
