External Wall Insulation
External Wall Insulation is ideal for homes with solid walls or poorly insulated cavity walls. These homes can lose up to 45% of their internal heat through the external walls.
Installation Process:
A layer of insulation boards (e.g., expanded polystyrene, phenolic foam) is fixed to the exterior walls using adhesive and mechanical fixings.
A reinforced base coat is applied, followed by a protective render or decorative finish (e.g., brick slip, pebble dash).
Benefits of External Wall Insulation (EWI)
Key Benefits:
Drastically reduces thermal losses through walls.
Improves weather resistance and exterior appearance.
Helps reduce damp and condensation issues.
Can save £400–£500+ annually on energy bills.
Considerations:
May require planning permission in conservation areas.
Increases wall thickness slightly, affecting windowsills and doorframes.
ECO4 Applicability:
Best suited for properties without cavity walls.
Helps significantly improve a home’s EPC rating when combined with other measures.
